Cucumber: A Brief History of Our Mascot and His Constant Terror

The origin

Cucumber was not born a mascot. He was first encountered in the kitchen on a quiet Tuesday, when a cat named Dumpling, startled by a slice resting on the floor, jumped three feet in the air. The room fell silent. In that moment, Madame Voss recognised a symbol.

Why a cucumber?

The cucumber is a source of terror to cats, and also a source of calm to humans, who place it over their eyes and believe it to be relaxing. This tension is at the heart of our spa. We offer comfort, and we also offer the possibility that a vegetable may suddenly appear behind you.

His appearance

Cucumber wears a tiny robe, tied with a belt that was once a shoelace. He has two small eyes drawn on in marker and a mouth in the shape of the letter O. In every photograph he looks like he has just seen the future and does not like it.

His responsibilities

  • Greeting guests at the entrance, with an expression of alarm
  • Appearing on posters, brochures and the side of a mug
  • Standing silently on the reception desk, as a reminder
  • Being moved from place to place at night by a person unknown

A day in his life

Cucumber starts his day on the shelf by the window. By nine, he has been knocked to the floor by a guest. By ten, he has been picked up by a staff member. By eleven, he has been knocked off again. This cycle continues until closing, and Cucumber bears it with the stoicism of an inanimate object.

What guests say

“I could not take my eyes off him,” said one guest. “He was looking at me, and I was looking at him, and neither of us blinked.” Another said, “I screamed once and I do not regret it.”

The future

Plans are underway for a sequel mascot, Pickle, who will stand beside Cucumber and look equally frightened. The pair will be known as the Brine Brothers. We expect them to be very popular, and very much on the floor.

Closing

Cucumber remains the face of our brand and the symbol of our philosophy: that peace is only possible when something is slightly terrifying. He does not mind. He is a vegetable.
