Towels are at the heart of the spa experience, and choosing the right one can mean the difference between a restful afternoon and a disappointing one. Our team at Hairball Haven has prepared this guide, which we hope will help.
Consider the size
Small towels are good for wiping. Medium towels are good for wrapping. Large towels are good for lying on, and they are the only kind that matter. A towel should be large enough to allow you to stretch out and still have some left to bury your face in.
Consider the texture
A good towel has loops, which are small circles of fabric that catch the claws. This is a feature. It provides tension, resistance and a feeling of being held. A towel without loops is slippery, and it will not keep you in place on the bed.
Consider the warmth
Warm towels are best. Cold towels should be avoided, or warmed by sitting on them. Towels fresh from the dryer are the gold standard, and may be recognised by their slightly scorched smell and their tendency to attract cats like a magnet.
Consider the fluff
Fluffy towels are a delight, but they require maintenance. You will need to knead them regularly to keep the fibres soft. A towel that has not been kneaded for a week will become sullen.
Consider the colour
- White: pure, calm, shows every hair
- Grey: practical, hides most of the evidence
- Blue: soothing, but quickly becomes sad
- Pink: bold, suggests optimism
- Black: only for dramatic occasions
Consider ownership
This is the most important consideration. A towel, once sat upon, belongs to the cat who sat on it. This is known as the Law of the Fold, and it has been upheld in every spa since time began. If a human tries to take the towel, they must first ask politely, and then wait.
Our recommendation
We recommend a large, warm, grey towel with loops, left in a pile in the sun. It does not need to be new. It does not need to be clean. It only needs to be there, so that you may sit on it and feel that the world has finally made sense.
